Nintendo Direct: Pokémon Direct unveils new Sword and Shield information
5 June 2019 – by Jack Taylor
New Pokémon and the first gameplay information for Pokémon Sword and Shield have been revealed in a Pokémon Direct.
Following the announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield back in February, a special Pokémon Direct has aired, showcasing the game's Galar region and many aspects of gameplay.
Five new Pokémon were revealed during the presentation: the Grass-type Gossifleur and its evolution Eldegoss; the Normal-type Sheep Pokémon, Wooloo; the Flying- and Steel-type Corviknight, used by the Galar Taxi company to transport people between towns; and Drednaw, a Water- and Rock-type Pokémon.
In addition, two legendary Pokémon - the sword-wielding Zacian and the shield-maned Zamazenta - were also revealed, and appear on the games' packaging.
A new mechanic called the Dynamax phenomenon allows Pokémon to grow to a gargantuan size for a limited time in battle, during which time they will be able to use 'Max Moves' - stronger versions of their usual attacks.
Dynamaxed Pokémon will also appear during Max Raid Battles, a new battle style which sets up to four Trainers against a wild Dynamax Pokémon, which retains its size and strength for the entire battle.
Galar also features a massive locale which connects many of the region's towns and cities; this is called the Wild Area, and a large number of wild Pokémon appear across numerous different terrains, with encounters varying by weather and location.
Pokémon Sword and Shield launch worldwide on 15 November, and in some regions, a double-pack or steelbook will be available for players who intend to purchase both games.
